As the economy continues to worsen, a lot of Americans are either scrambling to get cheap vehicle insurance or cancel their auto insurance. They do this in order to save money that they can use for other things. These moves however can only save money in the short run since they become costly in the future.

Let us look first at the danger of canceling your auto insurance outright. In the United States, if an individual drives a motor vehicle, that person is mandated by law to have or carry insurance. What happens if you are caught not having auto insurance? Let’s see. You can receive citations or a ticket, have your vehicle impounded or have your license suspended. Did I forget something? Oh yes, you may have to spend the night in jail. That’s how serious the government is when it comes to insurance. Note that any of the four penalties can result in you spending the money that you save. If you get apprehended more than once, that money could be gone in a flash.

Further, if you obtained the car on a loan, your debtor may force you get a policy that may have higher premiums. Again this would result in more financial burden for you.

What about having cheap vehicle insurance? Actually there’s really nothing wrong with having auto insurance where you pay lower premiums. However, you must have obtained this by getting discounts or other means. You would have no problem as long as the insurance you bought gives you the coverage that you need. The problem starts if you plan on getting this even lower. What happens if you do? You may not get enough coverage. Also, it can mean that you may have a higher deductible. Thus when an accident happens, the insurance becomes more of a burden than a help.

Let me repeat that if you have cheap vehicle insurance, be sure that you have enough coverage.
